Appearance

The appearance is the batter’s turn to work on the plate. Some fans confuse them with at-bats. Their main difference is occasions. At-bat happens under certain conditions, while the appearance occurs when the batter comes up to the plate with the contact between batter and pitcher.

The total number of appearances on the pate must be equal with the team’s runs, touched bases or putouts. They determine the players who qualified for the batting title. At-bats don’t play significant role in this statistic. The at-bats impact on the batting average. This rule is useful due to the difference between total appearances and at-bat result. Besides, the plate appearance isn’t recorded if the opponents throw the runner out to end the inning, there is a balk or wild pitch score.
