Ballpark

The ballpark is the venue for baseball games. It consists of the field of play in a diamond shape and spectator tribunes. These areas have strict rules and should be denoted by white lines, the other elements are open to the designer’s imagination. Some venues are multipurpose. They host football, soccer or baseball matches together with baseball and concerts.

The first baseball parks were wooden. They had a sturdy wooden base and platforms for seats supported by iron columns. Their fences served as advertisement boards for local businesses. These venues had one significant disadvantage – the fire could destroy them. American League Park in Washington D.C., Polo Grounds III in Manhattan are the bright examples of this finish. After that series, most of the stadiums gave place to new projects or steel and concrete modern venues.

The modern steel and concrete stadiums are jewel box ballparks. These materials have a longer time of service, they are harder for fire to destroy and give the flexible approach for designers. Multiple arenas position in existing residential flats and have a unique form. Some fields have specific peculiarities. Forbes Field in Baltimore is famous for its infield structure – some bases are higher than normal.
