Base path
What is base path in baseball?
What does the abandon of base path mean?
The base path is the straight line between the runner and its targeted base. It starts from the tag attempt point. The official rulebook defines that the runner is out if it runs more than three feet away from the baseline. That means it can’t veer more than 3 feet on both sides of its base path. If the fielder doesn’t tag the runner, the latter is free to run anywhere in the field bounds.
The umpires call the runners out when they abandon their base path or don’t try to reach the next base. This situation means the effort to continue advancing actions. It’s infrequent and occurs when the player considers that it’s out but it is eligible to play further. Its teammates often scream that the player can continue its route to next base.
