Chinese home run
What is Chinese home run in baseball?
What is the origin of this home run?
The Chinese home run isn’t obligatory performed by the player from this Asian country. This term is archaic, meaning the hit that clears the outfield fence closest to the home plate. Truly, this is the shortest possible in the ballpark. The only condition for that is the atypically short fence around the venue. This run has also the name Polo home run, referring to NY Giants Polo home arena. The hits met with the right foul line there.
The history didn’t save the origin of the Chinese part of this term. The 20th century immigration of Chinese people is one of the versions. They provided adequate mental labour for minimum wage for that. New York newspapers widely used it so the Chinese diaspora had to ask them to stop doing it in the 1950s. Since that time, this term descended in frequency. 1965 was the last time when the Chinese home run expression appeared in the media.
