Down

The term down in baseball is not the same as on the internet or the real world. It’s the synonym of out. If the defender tagged the runner, the latter would fall down of the field. One down means that the first batter is out of the game. Two outs suppose the two batters of the inning left behind the game. Three outs determine the end of the inning for the defensive team – the side is retired.
