Extra innings
What are extra innings in baseball?
How do the leagues control extra innings?
Who participated in the longest extra-inning game?
The extra innings extend the game to break the tie. They are essential in playoff matches and voluntary in the regular season. Lousy weather, darkness or necessity to prepare the field for other games are reasons to cancel them.
Most leagues use the 27-out rule for tie-breaking. That rule means the umpire has the right to stop the game if the team can’t break the time after reaching 27 outs. The World Series continues till one team gains at least one point. Some leagues limit the time and number of innings before declaring the draw. Asian leagues established a 12-inning game (nine essential and three extra ones) limit. NPB has time control – the game continues no longer than 3,5 hours.
The most extended extra-inning games continued more than 20 innings. 1981 Minor league season presented the 33-inning game between Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings. It continued for eight hours and 18 minutes (18 minutes after the resume). Dave Koza hit the decisive RBI and brought the victory to the Pawtucket.
