What does the basketball phrase “Luckboxing the draft” mean?
“Luckboxing the draft” is a term used to refer to a situation in which a team is fortunate enough to get both the first overall pick and have an exceptionally talented player to draft in that position. Teams are fortunate enough to get the first overall pick but even luckier that the player is an exceptional player and therefore considered to have luckboxed the draft.
For example, the Cleveland Cavaliers won the 2003 NBA Draft lottery and the right to pick first overall (Cavs odds of winning the draft were 22.5%) and with that first overall pick chose a generational talent in Lebron James. They were lucky in winning the draft with 22.5% odds and even luckier to win the right to draft Lebron James.
