One And One
What is the meaning of “one and one”?
What is “one and one” in basketball?
What does “one and one” refer to?
Fouled players in basketball frequently receive free throws. A shooting player receives two free throws, and a non-shooting player may receive free throws shots after the opposing team has committed a certain number of fouls. If the non-shooting player makes the first free throw, they receive another shot creating the one-and-one effect. One-and-one free throws are awarded based on the number of fouls.
The NBA does not have the one-and-one rule. Instead, on a player’s fifth foul, the opposing player receives two shots. International basketball awards one-and-ones once a team has five fouls in one quarter.
College basketball rules state once seven fouls in a half occur, the opposing team receives a one-on-one. After a team has 10 fouls in a half, the opposing team receives two free throws.
Like college, high school basketball grants a one-and-one when a team receives seven fouls in a half and two free throws after 10 fouls.
Example of One-And-One used in commentary: North Carolina commits their seventh foul of the half, sending Duke to the line. Williamson makes the shot and converts on the one-and-one.
