Performance Index Rating
What is called a “Performance Index Rating”?
What is the formula of a Performance Index Rating?
What is a Performance Index Rating used for?
Performance Index Rating is a kind of player rating which is used to determine the season and weekly Most Valuable Players. It was originally used by Liga ACB and then adopted by the Euroleague Company. It is calculated from the statistics available in a standard box score or stat line including adding all points, free throws made, fouls drawn, steals, blocks and rebounds as well as 2 and 3-point field goals and subtracting turnovers, free throw attempts, fouls committed, own shots blocked and 2 and 3-point field goal attempts.
Formula: PIR = (Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks + Fouls Drawn) – (Missed Field Goals + Missed Free Throws + Turnovers + Shots Rejected + Fouls Committed
Example:
A player statistics show that they have: 26 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 4 fouls drawn, 9 missed field goals, 7 missed free throws, 7 turnovers, 9 shots rejected, and 1 foul committed.
PIR = (26 + 5 + 10 + 1 + 1 + 4) – (9 + 7 + 7 + 9 + 1)
PIR = 47 – 33
PIR = 14
Therefore, this player has a Performance Index Rating of 14.
