What is meant by PER in basketball?
Player Efficiency Rating (PER) is a statistical measure used in the NBA to measure the effectiveness of a player by taking into consideration all statistics kept by the NBA, and weights the player’s production by minutes played per game, and number of team possessions per game. The PER of an “average” NBA player is 15.0.
This statistic was developed by John Hollinger, an analyst and writer for ESPN. Players that have a rating above 30 for a season, which has only been done 15 times, are considered to be runaway MVP candidate.
