Use The Glass
How to understand the basketball expression “Use the glass”?
What is the definition of “Use the glass” in basketball?
What does “Use the glass” stand for?
“Use the glass” refers to when an offensive player in basketball uses the backboard to make a shot, also known as a bank shot. College and professional backboards are made of glass.
When attempting a shot at an angle, a player has a higher chance of making the basket if they use the glass. However, although the chances of making the shot are much greater using the backboard, players tend to avoid using the glass because they feel it looks inferior and less “cool” than a basket that arches in from the top.
One of the best players in the history of the game, Tim Duncan, became a master at using the glass. Utilizing the backboard helped him to average 19 points a game with a field goal percentage of over 50 percent.
Examples of how Use The Glass is used in commentary: Duncan receives the pass from Parker and uses the glass for an easy two-pointer.
