Week in the NBA history. October 30-November 6

We continue the NBA history calendar. Today we’ll inform you about the main events that happened this week. That’s the adoption of 24 seconds per attack, the WNBA inauguration, and more. Read to know about that.

October 30

The NBA introduced 24 seconds shot clock and six fouls without free throws per quarter in 1954. It adopted the FIBA standard to accelerate the game. That replaced the traditional 30 seconds format widespread in the amateur leagues and NCAA. Now there are two types of the shot clock – the 24 seconds for a full attack and 14 seconds after the in-bound rebound of the offensive team.

The league presented the list of 35 Greatest All-Time players dedicated to the league’s 35th anniversary in 1980. It included Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Bob Cousy, Julius Erving, John Havlicek, George Mikan, Bob Pettit, Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell and Jerry West. Russell took the pole position as the best player in NBA history. But his number 6 was removed from the circuit only in 2022. Red Auerbach became the greatest coach, and the 1966-1967 Philadelphia 76ers was the best roster of the entire league.

The 1993 preseason game in London started the tradition of European matches. Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks played in the eyes of 9438 fans at Wembley Arena. Magic’s 120-95 victory commemorated the start of the two-day London Series.

October 30, 1996, is the birthday of the WNBA. Girls and women received the new dream. Almost each NBA franchise from the USA and Canada has a women’s analogue. It regularly delegates the stars to national teams of different countries. WNBA has its Draft and other elements, but the league games’ coverage is less active than the men’s championship.

John Stockton stepped on the floor for the 18th consecutive season with the Utah Jazz in 2001. He tied with Hakeem Olajuwon, who spent 17 uninterrupted seasons for Houston Rockets, but the latter player rushed to Toronto during that offseason.

October 31

Stephen Curry scored 53 points in a single game against the New Orleans Saints in 2015. This result is the personal highest result. Curry still plays for Golden State Warriors and scores at least 25-30 points per game.

Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets granted their fans the most scoring game in their rivalry history. The final score of their 2019 games were 159-158 in the Rockets’ favor. James Harden scored 59 points in a single game. Only one point lacked him from entering the 60-point club. The best forward from the opponent’s side was Brandley Beal, who scored 46 points. The average point per quarter was 35 per team. Another factor was the high level of goals made. Each player missed only one or two throws in each category.

November 1

The first NBA game in Toronto happened that day in 1946. Local Huskies lost to the New York Knicks 66-68. Interestingly, any fan taller than 6-8” Toronto’s center George Nostrand could attend the game for free. Fifty years later Knicks defeated Toronto Raptors 107-99.

2001 is memorable with the inaugural NBDL draft. Today it has the name NBA G League. Most teams use it as a farm of talents. However, the separate players don’t participate in the main league after the specific period of experience in the G-League, even after the Draft.

November 2

The Golden State Warriors and Denver Nuggets scored 320 points per both in 1990. That game at McNichols ended 162-158 in the Warriors’ favor. Chris Mulin scored 38 points for GSW and became the most resultative player in that game. Woolbridge from Nuggets contributed 37 points to his team, but that didn’t help them to win. Interestingly, both teams scored three-pointers above average statistics – GSW made 50 percent, and the Nuggets released 31 percent of the successful far throws.

The 24-hour network NBA TV launched this day in 1999. NBA presented the seven-hour simulcast referring to the start of the 1999-2000 regular season. NBA.com portal offered free broadcasts in Japanese dedicated to the league days in Japan. Today NBA TV offers the games live coverage, real-time statistic, and exclusive materials about players and teams. The channel is a part of these operators lists: DISH Network, D-Smart, Canal+Afrique, and others in IPTV, cable, and satellite distribution.

November 3

The Washington Capitols started 15 consecutive games winning streak in 1948. That was the best start of the season for any NBA team. In that game, they had beaten Philadelphia Warriors (now Golden State Warriors) 77-70. This mark stood for 45 years when the Houston Rockets tied them in 1993-1994. The current record is 24-0 for Golden State Warriors in the 2015-2016 season.

The first Soviet players appeared in regular season games in 1989 for the first time. These were Sarunas Marciulonis, who scored 19 points in the debut game of his GSW against Phoenix and scoreless Alexandr Volkov from Atlanta Hawks. Both players are the FIBA Hall of Fame members and active sport promoters worldwide.

Kobe Bryant started his career this day in 1996 as number 24 of the Los Angeles Lakers and spent 20 consecutive seasons. After that, he founded a fund and made everything to bring basketball to every point of the world, but his death in 2020 broke all plans. But his heritage is available in video archives and a plaque in the Hall of Fame.

November 4

Wilt Chamberlain from Philadelphia Warriors released two records this day. In 1960, he missed all ten free throws in a single game against Detroit. This record was broken by Shaquille O’Neal on December 8, 2000, when he missed 11 free throws. Chamberlain already established the record of 65 consecutive games with 30 points or more next year.

November 4, 1993, is the birthday of the Toronto Raptors. NBA Board of Governors decided to award the 28th expansion franchise to this city. Raptors is the second NBA team in Toronto. Local Huskies spent the single 1946-1947 season. The new team played the first game in the 1995-96 season and commemorated the 50th anniversary of the first NBA match in this Canadian city.

November 5

Miami Heat debuted in the NBA in 1988. Their first competitors became Los Angeles Clippers, who won the game 111-91. Sylvester Gray became the most resultative with 15 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.

November 6

The Los Angeles Lakers established the NBA-record road winning streak of 16 consecutive road games. The victory against Golden State local rivals was the first in that 1971 series.

The new home of the Indiana Pacers, the Conseco Field, opened its doors in 1999. Indiana baseball legend and member of the Hall of Fame John Wooden was the honorary scorer of the game against the Boston Celtics. NBC broadcaster Bob Costas introduced the players, and local star Crystal Gayle performed the national anthem. The hosts paid tribute to the 50 greatest basketball players who originated from the state.

November 6, 2007, game ended the 354-game sellouts streak at Arco Arena, home of the New York Knicks. Only 14908 people of 17317 maximal capacity came to support the hosts or their opponents Seattle Supersonics. The sold-out period continued since 1999.
