What is the definition of Captain in hockey?
Captain is the player responsible for discussing interpretations of the rules with the on-ice officials. He is often seen as the team leader on and off the ice. A captain can be recognized by the “C” on the front of their jersey.
One of the most famous captains in league history was Mark Messier, who helped guide the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers to Stanley Cup victories.
In rare occasions teams have chosen to not have a captain and only choose alternate captains.
A goalie cannot wear a “C” nor have captain’s privileges, however, the Vancouver Canucks selected Roberto Luongo as captain in 2008 to the beginning of the 2010 season as a symbolic gesture that baffled many fans.
