Center Line
What is Center Line in hockey?
How to understand a hockey term Center Line?
What is the definition of Center Line in hockey?
The Center Line is a red line in the middle of the ice that cuts the ice surface in half and is used by linesman to determine if an icing situation is in effect. A faceoff dot is located along the line at “center ice” and is where pucks are dropped at beginning of games and after goals are scored.
Although the line is always red, each arena may appear a little different. Some use a checkered pattern and some diamonds so its not a solid red line.
Prior to 2005, the NHL had a form of offsides called Center-line Offsides or “Two-line pass”, which used the line as a determining factor to stop teams from sending players down the ice for long stretch passes. The rule is no longer enforced.
