How to understand a hockey term Dead Puck Era?
What is the definition of Dead Puck Era in hockey?
Dead Puck Era is a period of time in the NHL, between the 1993-94 season and the 2004-05 NHL lockout, in which the game saw a significant decline in scoring. The arguments behind the decline included the introduction and widespread usage of the neutral zone trap and other defensive systems, the decline in talent and the prevalence of clutch and grab.
Prior to the 1993-94 NHL season, teams on average scored 3.63 goals per game or a combined game score of 7.26 goals being scored each game. The following season these averages started a precipitous decline to 3.24 and 6.48.
Scoring reached a low of 2.56 goals per team per game and a total of 5.12 goals per game in the 2003-04 season — this was 2.14 less goals per game than the 1992-93 NHL season.
