What is the term empty net for in ice hockey?
Empty Net occurs in hockey when a team removes their goalie from the ice in order to gain an extra attacker.
A team will usually pull their goalie in the final minute when they are only down a goal in order to gain the extra attacker to try to overwhelm the opposing defense. As a result of the goaltender being “pulled” the net is empty. If an opposing players shots and scores a goal into the “empty net” it is sometimes referred to as an “empty netter”.
Examples of how empty net is used in commentary:
- The Flyers will empty their net and gain the extra forward, hoping that they can gain a score in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.
