What is the term fine for in ice hockey?

During a game of ice hockey, players for penalties may be punished with various fines. Depending on the duration and/or severity of the punishment, hockey fines can be divided into seven categories:

  • Small fine is a two-minute penalty imposed on an individual player.
  • Small bench fine is a two-minute penalty imposed on the team.
  • A large fine is a five-minute penalty.
  • Disciplinary fine is a ten minute penalty.
  • Disciplinary fine until the end of the game is removing a player before the end of the match in the locker room without disqualification.
  • Match-penalty is removing a player before the end of the locker room and disqualification.
  • Free throw is penalty shot.

When a hockey player serves any of the fines, only the net time of the game is taken into account.

All fines are recorded in the official minutes of the match. Moreover, depending on the type of punishment, the penalty time is recorded on a specific player or the whole team. In case of disciplinary fine on the hockey player before the end of the game, 20 minutes of the total penalty time are written in his name. In case of a match fine, 25 minutes of the total penalty time are recorded on the remote player.

In the event that the fine is imposed after the end of the match, then they must also be fixed in the official minutes.

The rules of some leagues suggest that in the case of a team fine, the right to choose a player who goes to the penalty box remains with the coach or manager of the team. If for some reason they do not, then the chief arbiter has the right to appoint him on his own.

In cases where the penalty time for two hockey players of the same team ends at the same time, the captain is obliged to determine the sequence of players leaving the penalty box and notify the chief referee about this.

If a player receives a ten-minute disciplinary fine in the final 10 minutes of the meeting, then he must not go to the penalty box, but to the locker room. This rule is canceled if extra time is provided for in the match.

In the event that a player was fined, but the opposing team realized a numerical advantage in a situation of deferred punishment, the penalty time may not actually be served.
