Poke Checking is a tactic in hockey where a player knocks the puck away from an opponent while using the blade of their stick. This move is most often done by the goaltenders and defencemen. Also referred to as a “Poke Check”.

Poke checking is a defensive move. It is done when a defensive player goes after the puck carrier and uses his stick to poke or “jab'” away the puck before physical contact between the two players is made. Or by the goaltender when an offensive player is near the net.
