What number you wear can often be a big part of a player’s hockey identity. Some players care more than others about the number they don, but even for those who are indifferent to them, those numbers help connect players with young fans and can even have sentimental value. Like it or not, numbers are a big part of what can make this game great.

Johnny Gaudreau

John Michael Gaudreau is an American professional ice hockey player known as the winger for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the NCAA Division I’s Boston College Eagles from 2011 to 2014. Gaudreau was selected by the Flames in the fourth round, 104th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Nicknamed “Johnny Hockey,” he was the 2014 winner of the Hobey Baker Award as the best player in the NCAA, and, during his first full NHL season in 2014–15, he was selected to play in the 2015 NHL All-Star Game and was a Calder Memorial Trophy finalist for the NHL’s best rookie. He won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s most gentlemanly player for the 2016–17 season.

Mats Sundin

Mats Johan Sundin is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player who played the majority of his career in the National Hockey League (NHL), retiring in 2009. Originally drafted first overall in 1989, Sundin played his first four seasons in the NHL with the Quebec Nordiques. He was then traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1994, where he played the majority of his career, serving 11 seasons as team captain. At the end of the 2007–08 season, Sundin was the longest-serving non-North American-born captain in NHL history. Sundin last played for the Vancouver Canucks in the 2008–09 season before announcing his retirement on 30 September 2009. He appeared in the Stanley Cup playoffs in 10 of his 18 seasons.

Excluding his rookie season, the shortened lockout season and his half-season with Vancouver, Sundin scored at least 70 points in every season of his career, played at least 70 games in every season and led the Maple Leafs in points in every year he was with the team save for 2002–03, when Alexander Mogilny beat him by seven points. On 14 October 2006, Sundin became the first Swedish player to score 500 goals. He is one of the Maple Leafs’ franchise all-time leaders in goals (420) and points (987). Over his career, Sundin averaged just over a point per game (1,349 points in 1,346 NHL games).

Internationally, Sundin won three gold medals with Sweden at the World Championships and a gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

Sundin was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame on 26 June 2012, in his first year of eligibility. He became the second Swede, following Börje Salming (another long-time Maple Leafs player), to be chosen to the Hall of Fame. Sundin was also inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2017 Sundin was named one of the ‘100 Greatest NHL Players’ in history.

Pavel Datsyuk

Pavel Valerievich Datsyuk is a Russian professional ice hockey player. He’s known for playing with Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Datsyuk was nicknamed the “Magic Man” honoring his incredible stickhandling and creativity with the puck. From 2001 to 2016, he played for the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL). In 2017, Datsyuk was named one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” in history, and was the only active player outside of the NHL at the time of announcement.

Datsyuk won the Stanley Cup in 2002 and 2008 with the Red Wings, and the Gagarin Cup in 2017 with SKA Saint Petersburg. He was part of the Russia men’s national ice hockey team at the Olympic Games in 2002, 2006, 2010 and was team captain in 2014 and 2018. With his gold medal win at the 2018 Olympics, Datsyuk joined the Triple Gold Club.

Datsyuk won the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s top defensive forward in the 2007–08, 2008–09 and 2009–10 NHL season. He also won four consecutive Lady Byng Memorial Trophies, from 2006 to 2009, awarded for performance and sportsmanship. He was nominated for the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player following the 2008–09 season. Datsyuk is well known for his elite defensive play and game-changing offensive skills.

Bill Guerin

William Robert Guerin is an American former professional ice hockey player, also known as the general manager of the Minnesota Wild. He previously was the assistant general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins and general manager of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Guerin played 18 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), winning two Stanley Cup championships with the New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Internationally, Guerin represented the United States in the Olympics in 1998, 2002 and 2006, and participated in two Ice Hockey World Championships. Guerin is the first player of Hispanic descent to play in the NHL.

Slava Kozlov

Vyacheslav Anatolevich “Slava” Kozlov is a Russian former professional ice hockey left winger.

Kozlov was a member of the Stanley Cup winning Detroit Red Wings teams of 1997 and 1998, and was also a member of the famed Russian Five. He also later played for the Buffalo Sabres and Atlanta Thrashers.

Ken Linseman

Kenneth S. “The Rat” Linseman is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre who played 15 seasons in the National Hockey League for the Philadelphia Flyers, Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs. He also played one season in the World Hockey Association for the Birmingham Bulls.

Cam Atkinson

Cameron Thomas Atkinson is an American professional ice hockey player known as the right winger for the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League (NHL). Atkinson was selected by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the sixth round, 157th overall, of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Although smaller than most forwards in the NHL, he is known for his great speed, soft hands and excellent shooting skills.

Jamie Baker

James Paul Baker is a Canadian former ice hockey player, having played for the Quebec Nordiques, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a former radio personality for the San Jose Sharks, and was their television color commentator from 2014-2020

Krys Barch

Krystofer Barch is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward. He is also known as a development coach within the Buffalo Sabres organization.

Stanislav Chistov

Stanislav Mikhailovich Chistov is a Russian professional ice hockey player known for playing with HC Lada Togliatti of the Supreme Hockey League.

Dave Christian

David William Christian is an American former professional ice hockey forward. He played on the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team that won the gold medal during the 1980 Winter Olympics. Additionally he played for five National Hockey League teams over a 15-season career.

Artem Chubarov

Artyom Andreyevich “Artemis” Chubarov is a Russian former professional ice hockey player. He last played with HC Dynamo Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He also played for the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL) and for their minor league affiliates in both the International Hockey League and American Hockey League.

Andrew Cogliano

Andrew Cogliano is a Canadian professional ice hockey player known for playing with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He formerly played for the Edmonton Oilers, Anaheim Ducks and the Dallas Stars. On December 31, 2013, Cogliano became the 20th player in NHL history to play 500 consecutive games, and only the fifth to do so from the beginning of his NHL career. On November 4, 2017, Cogliano played in his 800th consecutive game, placing him on the NHL’s most consecutive games played list. The streak ended on January 14, 2018, when Cogliano was suspended for two games.

Henrik Borgström

Kurt Henrik Mikael Borgström is a Finnish professional ice hockey player known as a prospect for the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League (NHL). He also played two seasons for the University of Denver in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). Borgström was an all-American at Denver and led the Pioneers to the 2017 NCAA Championship. Borgström was selected 23rd overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers.

Cam Barker

Cameron Barker is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenseman. He was selected third overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks and spent four seasons with the club before being traded to the Minnesota Wild in 2010. Internationally, Barker played for the Canadian national team, and won back-to-back gold medals at the 2005 and 2006 World Junior Championships with the junior team. He is widely regarded as a top draft bust.
