Who wore number 42 in NHL?

Choosing a jersey number sometimes has a philosophy of its own. Each NHL player has his own number logic and usually keeps this number for the rest of his career if possible.

Josh Manson

Joshua David Manson is an American professional ice hockey player known as the defenceman and alternate captain for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League (NHL). Manson was selected by the Ducks in the sixth round, 160th overall, of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He is the son of former longtime NHL defenceman, Dave Manson.

Manson played three seasons of NCAA Division I hockey with Northeastern University, where he was rewarded when he was selected as HE Best Defensive Defenseman and was named to the 2013–14 Hockey East Second All-Star Team.

Richard Smehlik

Richard Šmehlík is a Czech former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted in the fifth round, 97th overall, by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft.

Šmehlík joined the Sabres for the 1992–93 season, and played there for nine seasons. He left via free agency for the Atlanta Thrashers before the 2002–03 season.

At the trade deadline of the 2002–03 season, Šmehlík was traded to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a draft pick. Šmehlík would go on to win the Stanley Cup that season with the Devils. He retired following the season.

In his NHL career, Šmehlík appeared in 644 games, tallying 49 goals and adding 146 assists. He also appeared in 88 playoff games, scoring 1 goal and recording 14 assists.

Sergei Makarov

Sergei Mikhailovich Makarov is a Russian former ice hockey right wing and two-time Olympic gold medalist. He was voted one of six players to the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) Centennial All-Star Team in a poll conducted by a group of 56 experts from 16 countries.

Bob Sweeney

Robert Emmett Sweeney is an American former professional ice hockey center.

As a youth, Sweeney played in the 1976 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Assabet Valley. He was drafted out of high school by the Boston Bruins in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, and went on to play four years at Boston College. He made his NHL debut in the 1986–87 season, but spent most of the year with the Bruins AHL affiliate the Moncton Golden Flames. The 1987–88 season was Sweeney’s first full year, a season where Boston traveled to the Stanley Cup Finals only to be swept by the Edmonton Oilers.

Following six seasons with Boston, Sweeney was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Sabres in 1992 and then by the New York Islanders in 1995. After being traded to the Calgary Flames during the 1995–96 season Sweeney retired from the NHL. He spent the next season in the IHL before traveling across the Atlantic to play in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga from 1997 until 2001. He is also known as the Executive Director of the Boston Bruins Foundation.

Robert Esche

Robert L. Esche is an American former professional ice hockey goaltender, also known as the president of the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Utica City FC of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL). He previously played eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Phoenix Coyotes and Philadelphia Flyers.

Tyler Bozak

Tyler Bozak is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre known for playing with the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League (NHL). Bozak has also previously played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to being signed by the Maple Leafs as a free agent, Bozak had played two seasons at the University of Denver in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). In 2018, after nine seasons with the Maple Leafs, Bozak signed with the Blues in free agency. In his first season with the Blues, Bozak won the Stanley Cup, defeating the Boston Bruins in 2019.

Jason Akeson

Jason Akeson is a Canadian professional ice hockey player known as the right winger for Kölner Haie of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He has previously played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Philadelphia Flyers.

Sven Andrighetto

Sven Andrighetto is a Swiss professional ice hockey winger known for playing with the ZSC Lions of the National League (NL). He was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the third-round (86th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, his last year of eligibility. He previously played with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, with whom he would finish sixth in scoring in 2012–13.

Steve Bancroft

Steve Bancroft is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Selected 21st overall in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, he played in 6 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks and San Jose Sharks.

Bancroft grew up in the small Ontario community of Madoc, Ontario playing his minor hockey for the local Madoc Minor Hockey Association clubs from novice to bantam. He competed in several OMHA championship series before elevating to the Jr.C. level with his hometown Madoc Hurricanes in 1985–86. That same season, he also spent time playing at the Jr.B. level with the Trenton Golden Hawks.

The following year, Bancroft moved to St. Catharines, Ontario and played for the St. Catharines Falcons Jr. B team of the Golden Horseshoes League of the OHA.

Bancroft retired from professional hockey in 2006 and became a real estate agent for Century 21 in Madoc, Ontario.

Michal Barinka

Michal Barinka is a Czech professional ice hockey defenceman known for playing with HC Kometa Brno of the Czech Extraliga. He was drafted 59th overall in the 2nd round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Chicago Blackhawks. He was traded to the Senators in a three-way deal on July 9, 2006, that sent Martin Havlat to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Nathan Bastian

Nathan Bastian is a Canadian professional ice hockey player known as the right winger for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the Devils in the second round, 41st overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Josef Beranek

Josef Beránek a Czech former professional ice hockey player and coach. He was selected in the fourth round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, 78th overall, by the Edmonton Oilers. He has extensive professional playing experience, in the Czech Republic, the AHL, and the NHL. At the NHL level, he has played for the Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks, and Pittsburgh Penguins. He ended his playing career with HC Slavia Praha in the Czech Republic. In 1998, Beránek was part of the Czech Republic’s gold-medal winning Olympic ice hockey team.

Alexander Burmistrov

Alexander Olegovich Burmistrov is a Russian professional ice hockey centre known for playing with Ak Bars Kazan of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He previously played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets franchise as well as the Arizona Coyotes, before leaving the NHL after a short stint with the Vancouver Canucks. Burmistrov won the Gagarin Cup with Ak Bars Kazan in 2018.

John Byce

John Arthur Byce is a retired American ice hockey player. He played in 21 regular season games and in 8 playoff games in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins between 1990 and 1992. The rest of his career, which ended in 2000, was spent in various minor leagues. Internationally Byce played for the American national team at the 1992 World Championships.

Dan Bylsma

Daniel Brian Bylsma is an American professional ice hockey coach and former player. He is the former head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres in the National Hockey League (NHL), and was also an assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings. He also was the former head coach of the United States men’s national ice hockey team. Prior to coaching the Sabres, Bylsma was the head coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins, whom he led to a Stanley Cup championship in 2009, just four months after being promoted to Pittsburgh’s head coaching position.

Prior to coaching the Penguins, he played as a forward in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and coached in the American Hockey League (AHL). He was drafted in the sixth round (109th overall) of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, by the Winnipeg Jets.

Rob Conn

Robert Phillip Conn is a former professional ice hockey right wing.

Conn was born in Calgary, Alberta. As a youth, he played in the 1981 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Calgary. He played in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Blackhawks and Buffalo Sabres. In his NHL career, Conn appeared in thirty games. He scored two goals and added five assists. In 1995, he won the Calder Cup with the Albany River Rats, and again 1996 with the Rochester Americans.

Steve Dykstra

Steven Dykstra is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres, Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Hartford Whalers.

In his NHL career, Dykstra appeared in 217 games. He scored 8 goals and added 32 assists.

In 1988, he played 27 games for Buffalo Sabres before being traded to Edmonton for Scott Metcalfe. He played 15 of the season’s last 21 games for Edmonton. Dykstra did receive a 1988 Stanley Cup ring, as he played the required 42 regular-season games, but his name was left off the Cup, because not all 42 games were played with Edmonton.

Michael Del Zotto

Michael Del Zotto is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman known for playing with the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted in the first round, 20th overall, by the New York Rangers at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He has previously played in the NHL for the Rangers, Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers, Vancouver Canucks, Anaheim Ducks, St. Louis Blues and Columbus Blue Jackets. Del Zotto won the Stanley Cup with the Blues in 2019.
