Whether we’re talking about jersey numbers or using stats in sports arguments, numbers have and will always have a place in sports in a variety of different ways. Players are recognized by their numbers and they are part of a player’s legacy.

Jake Gardiner

Jake William Gardiner is an American professional ice hockey defenseman known for playing with the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has also played with for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was drafted 17th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Frans Nielsen

Frans Nielsen is a Danish professional ice hockey player known for playing with Eisbären Berlin of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL). He previously played with the New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League (NHL). Nielsen is the first Danish citizen to play in the NHL.

Brian Campbell

Brian Wesley Campbell is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played for the Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks and Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2010, assisting on the deciding goal.

Valtteri Filppula

Valtteri Hasbula Filppula is a Finnish professional ice hockey forward known for playing with Genève-Servette HC of the National League (NL).

He won the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings in 2008. He has previously played with the Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders.

Francis Bouillon

Francis Joseph Bouillon is an American-Canadian former professional ice hockey defenseman who played 14 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators. He also played a season for HC Ambrì-Piotta in the National League A (NLA), the top-tier league in Switzerland. He is also known as a Development Coach for the Montreal Canadiens.

Fedor Tyutin

Fedor Anatolievich Tyutin is a Russian former professional ice hockey defenceman. Tyutin was drafted in the second round, 40th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Derek Dorsett

Derek Dorsett is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger who played for the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Blue Jackets drafted him in 2006 in the seventh round, 189th overall. After nine years in the NHL, Dorsett retired after repeated injuries to his neck. He is also known as the assistant to the head coach of the Upper Arlington ice hockey team. Dorsett was mostly famous for his role similar to that of an enforcer.

Dany Heatley

Daniel “Dany” James Heatley is a German-born Canadian former professional ice hockey winger. Originally drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers second overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the National Hockey League (NHL) rookie of the year in 2002.

One of the Senators’ perennial leading scorers during his tenure with Ottawa, Heatley set franchise records for single-season goals (50) in 2005–06, and points (105) in 2006–07, a season in which he also scored 50 goals. He played on the left wing with linemates Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson. The line was consistently among the highest-scoring in the NHL after its formation in 2005–06, with the trio combining for a total of 296 points that season.

Heatley represented Team Canada in six World Championships, two Olympics and one World Cup of Hockey, as well as two World Junior Championships. In 2008, he became one of the Canada’s all-time leaders in goals and points for the World Championships.

Heatley later played for the San Jose Sharks, Minnesota Wild and the Anaheim Ducks of the NHL, and last played with the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in 2015–16.

Timo Helbling

Timo Helbling is a Swiss former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National League (NL) for HC Davos, Kloten Flyers, HC Lugano, HC Fribourg-Gottéron, SC Bern, EV Zug, SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers, Oulun Karpat of the Finish Liiga, the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL). Helbling was originally drafted 162nd overall by the Nashville Predators in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.

Justin Hocking

Justin Hocking is a Canadian retired professional ice hockey defenceman who played one game in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Los Angeles Kings during the 1993–94 NHL season.

Born in Stettler, Alberta, Hocking was selected in the second round (39th overall) in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings.

Hocking also played in the International Hockey League, ECHL, American Hockey League and later in the British Ice Hockey Superleague.

Roman Horák

Roman Horák is a Czech ice hockey player known for playing with HC Sparta Praha of the Czech Extraliga (ELH). He previously played nine games in the Czech Extraliga with HC České Budějovice before coming to North America to play two WHL seasons with the Chilliwack Bruins. He was selected by the New York Rangers in the fifth round, 127th overall, of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, and joined the Calgary Flames organization via trade in 2011. In 2014, he was traded by the Flames for a brief stint with the Edmonton Oilers.

Tomáš Kaberle

Tomáš Kaberle is a Czech former professional ice hockey defenceman. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL), most notably for the Toronto Maple Leafs, as well as for the Boston Bruins, with whom he won the Stanley Cup, Carolina Hurricanes and the Montreal Canadiens. Kaberle also played in the Czech Extraliga for HC Kladno and HC Kometa Brno.

A four-time NHL All-Star, Kaberle also played for the Czech national team and won a bronze medal with the team at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Kaberle is one of the highest scoring defencemen in Maple Leafs franchise history. Though Kaberle began and played most of his career with Toronto, it was only after he was traded to the Bruins he won his first and only Stanley Cup championship.

Andrei Kovalenko

Andrei Nikolaevich Kovalenko is a Russian former professional ice hockey forward. He played in the National Hockey League with the Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes and the Boston Bruins. He is also known as the chairman of the Kontinental Hockey League players association (KHL PA).

Kyle Palmieri

Kyle Charles Palmieri is an American professional ice hockey player known as the right winger for the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Growing up in Long Island, Palmieri played youth hockey for the Devils-sponsored teams at Codey Arena in West Orange, New Jersey. He attended St. Peter’s Preparatory School for two years before earning an opportunity to play for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP). During his time in the program, he tallied 15 goals and 15 assists through 33 games. As a result of his play, Palmieri was drafted in the first round, 26th overall, by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. After being released from the NTDP, Palmieri played one season of college hockey for the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Palmieri spent one season with the Fighting Irish before turning professional with the Ducks’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. He split his first three seasons with the team between the Crunch and the Duck before becoming a mainstay on the NHL level. Following his fifth season with the team, Palmieri was traded to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for second and third-round draft picks in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. Palmieri continued to produce while with the Devils and set numerous career-highs over six seasons. After spending six seasons with the Devils, Palmieri was traded to the New York Islanders.

Internationally, Palmieri has represented the United States at both the junior and senior levels. His first international tournament was at the 2008 World U-17 Hockey Challenge where he won a silver medal.

David Nemirovsky

David Semenovich Nemirovsky is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward.

Nemirovsky was born in Toronto, Canada, and is of Russian descent. As a youth, he played in the 1990 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Wexford, Toronto.

Nemirovsky was drafted 84th overall by the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. Picked from the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League, he went on to play parts of four seasons with Florida, playing 91 games for the Panthers and scoring 16 goals and 22 assists for 38 points, he also picked up 42 penalty minutes.

Nemirovsky then spent three seasons with the St. John’s Maple Leafs in the American Hockey League before moving to Europe. After short spells in Sweden and Russia, he spent two seasons in Finland before returning to Russia in 2003. In 2010, he played with CSKA Moscow. Nemirovsky came out of retirement and signed with CSKA Moscow of the KHL in 2013.
