The fortunate players who get to choose their own number often choose a lucky number, stick with the one they’ve always worn or wear a number in honor of a family member. Some players though, choose a number that’s cute or a deep and meaningful number.

Adam McQuaid

Adam Mark McQuaid is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He formerly played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Boston Bruins, New York Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets. McQuaid was known primarily as an enforcer for his physical play and capability as a fighter, often protecting younger or smaller members of the team. He won the Stanley Cup in 2011 with the Bruins.

David Jones

David Jones is a Canadian former professional ice hockey right winger who played for the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, and Minnesota Wild in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Paul Ranger

Paul D. Ranger is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman, also known as an assistant coach with the UOIT Ridgebacks. He has spent the majority of his professional career with the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League before leaving the sport at the professional level for almost three years due to severe depression. Ranger returned to professional hockey at the American Hockey League with the Toronto Marlies during the 2012–13 season, and subsequently signed a one-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 24, 2013, to return to the NHL.

Frédérik Gauthier

Frédérik Gauthier is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre known for playing with the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract to the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). Gauthier was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round, 21st overall, of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft after spending three years with the Rimouski Océanic in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Gauthier became a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization following the 2014–15 season. During his developmental years with the Maple Leafs American Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, he helped them clinch their first Calder Cup in franchise history.

A native of Quebec, Gauthier developed in its local minor ice hockey programs and intended to pursue a collegiate career rather than the QMJHL. After his selection by the Océanic in the QMJHL and Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League, he was encouraged by Sidney Crosby to pursue a career in his native province. During his tenure with the team, Gauthier competed for Team Canada at various international tournaments. He won a gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World U18 Championships and 2015 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

Cam Fowler

Cameron Matthew Fowler is a Canadian-born American professional ice hockey player known as the defenceman for the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected 12th overall by the Ducks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

A dual citizen, Fowler decided to represent the United States internationally and won a gold medal as a member of the junior team at the 2010 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. He was a member of the 2010 Windsor Spitfires team that won the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) championship, as well as the Memorial Cup.

Zack Kassian

Zack Adam Kassian is a Canadian professional ice hockey player known as the winger for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL). During his junior career, he won a Memorial Cup with the Windsor Spitfires in 2010. Selected 13th overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, he began his career within the Buffalo Sabres organization before being traded to the Canucks in 2012. He played parts of four seasons with the Canucks before they traded him to the Montreal Canadiens in 2015. Kassian never played for the Canadiens as he was suspended for substance abuse issues, and was traded to the Oilers a few months later.

Internationally, he competed with Canada’s under-20 team at the 2011 World Junior Championships and won a silver medal. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 211 pounds, Kassian plays in the style of a power forward and is known for playing with aggression and physicality.

Kip Miller

Kip Charles Miller is an American former ice hockey forward. He last played for the American Hockey League Grand Rapids Griffins in 2006–07. He was drafted by the Quebec Nordiques as their 4th-round pick in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft, 72nd overall.

Miller was born in Lansing, Michigan, and played college hockey for the Michigan State University Spartans. During his college career he registered 116 goals, 145 assists and 261 points, leading the CCHA in scoring for two consecutive seasons. Miller was awarded the Hobey Baker Memorial Award in 1990, the first Spartan to receive the honor. Miller’s cousin, goaltender Ryan Miller, was the second Spartan to win the Hobey Baker Award in 2001. In all, ten members of Miller’s family (including his brothers Kevin and Kelly) have played college hockey for Michigan State. Kip’s other cousin and Ryan Miller’s brother is Drew Miller who is known for playing with the Detroit Red Wings. During his twelve-year NHL career, Miller played for the Nordiques, Minnesota North Stars, San Jose Sharks, New York Islanders, Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim and Washington Capitals.

Miller is the first player in New York Islanders history to play for the team three different times.

Tomáš Mojžíš

Tomáš Mojžíš is a Czech professional ice hockey defenceman known for playing with Slovan Bratislava of the Kontinental Hockey League.

Mojžíš was drafted in the eighth round, 246th overall, by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He has played for HC Pardubice (Czech Jr.), the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL), Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL), Manitoba Moose (AHL), Peoria Rivermen (AHL), St. Louis Blues (NHL), and Vancouver Canucks (NHL).

He was a member of the Czech national inline hockey team at the 2008 Men’s World Inline Hockey Championships in Bratislava, Slovakia.

On July 7, 2008, Mojžíš signed a multi-year contract with the Minnesota Wild. Tomáš featured in only four games with the Wild before he was later assigned to affiliate, the Houston Aeros for the majority of the 2008–09 season. He was subsequently released from the second year of his contract with the Wild and signed with Modo Hockey of the Swedish Elitserien on July 13, 2009.

On July 18, 2010, Mojžíš returned to Russia and signed a one-year contract as a free agent with HC Dinamo Minsk of the KHL.

Sean Pronger

Sean James Pronger is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who grew up in Dryden, Ontario, and played in the National Hockey League from 1995 to 2004. He played for the following teams: Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Boston Bruins, Columbus Blue Jackets and Vancouver Canucks, having been drafted 51st overall by Vancouver in 1991. In 260 regular-season games, he scored 23 goals and 36 assists for 59 points, picking up 159 penalty minutes. He is the older brother of Chris Pronger. Their mother Eila Pronger is from Pori, Finland.

Bobby Ryan

Bobby Ryan is an American professional ice hockey winger. He previously played for the Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted second overall by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.

He played six seasons with the Ducks before being traded to the Senators in 2013. He has also represented the United States in international and Olympic hockey.

Ben Scrivens

Ben Scrivens is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender, also known as the team manager of the University of Denver men’s team. He has also played in the NHL for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers, and Montreal Canadiens.

Scrivens played four years with the Cornell Big Red of the ECAC. After his senior season, Scrivens was named a first team All-American, ECAC Goaltender of the Year and was one of ten finalists for the Hobey Baker Award. He started his professional career with the Reading Royals of the ECHL, before being called up to join the Toronto Marlies at the end of the 2010–11 AHL season.

Hannu Toivonen

Hannu Pekka Toivonen is a Finnish former professional ice hockey goaltender. He’s also known as the goaltending coach for the Toronto Marlies. He played with the Boston Bruins and the St. Louis Blues in the National Hockey League (NHL), the former of which drafted him 29th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. Toivonen also spent several years with the Tampereen Ilves of the Liiga in his home country.

Although Toivonen was widely considered to be a top goaltending prospect, he was injured in 2005–06 and never regained the form that made him a first-round selection in 2002.

Sergei Zinovjev

Sergei Olegovich Zinovjev is a Russian former professional ice hockey centre and General Manager of his original club, Metallurg Novokuznetsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He is two-time World Champion (2008, 2009) for the Russian national team.

Zinovjev was selected 73rd overall by the Boston Bruins in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Zinovjev has played ten career NHL games, scoring one assist. In 2004, Zinovjev was released from the Russian national team after testing positive for marijuana. In July 2009, he signed a five-year contract in a return with Salavat Yulaev Ufa. He concluded his 16-year professional career following the 2013–14 season.

Jeff Zehr

Jeff Zehr is a Canadian professional ice hockey winger known for playing with the Flint Generals of the International Hockey League. Zehr was drafted 31st overall by the New York Islanders in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He signed with the Boston Bruins as a free agent in 1999, but missed most of 1999–2000 season after suffering a knee injury during practice and only managed to play four games in all for Boston. He moved to the ECHL afterwards, suiting up for five different teams during a four-year spell. He later purchased the London Lakers, later relocating them to Plattsville, Ontario.
