Whether we’re talking about jersey numbers or using stats in sports arguments, numbers have and will always have a place in sports in a variety of different ways. Players are recognized by their numbers and they are part of a player’s legacy.

P.K. Subban

Pernell-Karl Sylvester Subban is a Canadian professional ice hockey player known as the defenceman for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). Subban was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the second round, 43rd overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. In 2013, he won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenceman, and tied with Kris Letang as the leading scorer among defencemen. In the summer of 2014, he signed an eight-year, $72 million contract with the Canadiens, running through the 2021–22 season. After the 2015–16 season, Subban was traded to the Nashville Predators, where he spent three seasons before being traded to New Jersey in 2019.

Chris VandeVelde

Chris VandeVelde is an American former professional ice hockey player. He last played for EC Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Hockey League (EBEL). VandeVelde was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 4th round (97th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and played in the National Hockey League for the Oilers and the Philadelphia Flyers.

Andrew Peters

Andrew Peters is a Canadian former professional ice hockey left winger. Peters played in the National Hockey League for the Buffalo Sabres, and the New Jersey Devils.

Eriah Hayes

Eriah Joseph Hayes is an American former professional ice hockey player. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the San Jose Sharks.

He played junior hockey with the Waterloo Blackhawks. Hayes attended Minnesota State University, Mankato where he played four seasons (2009–2013) of NCAA Division I hockey with the Minnesota State Mavericks, registering 52 goals, 44 assists, 96 points, and 245 penalty minutes in 153 games.

On April 5, 2013, the San Jose Sharks signed Hayes as a free agent to an NHL entry-level contract. On January 3, 2014, after playing 36 AHL games, Hayes was recalled from the Worcester Sharks to join San Jose; however, a winter storm prevented him from joining the NHL team in time for the match against the Colorado Avalanche, but he was on the ice with San Jose to make his NHL debut in a 3–2 shootout win over the home team Chicago Blackhawks. On January 30 against the Calgary Flames, Hayes scored his first NHL goal against Karri Ramo.

On October 11, 2014, Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson announced that Hayes has been reassigned to Worcester.

On August 13, 2015, Hayes signed as a free agent a one-year contract with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.

On October 3, 2017, he announced on his Twitter account that he retired from hockey.

Wayne Primeau

Wayne Michael Primeau is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL). He is the younger brother of Keith Primeau.

Primeau was a first round draft pick of the Owen Sound Platers in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and played with the Platers for three years from 1992 to 1995.

He was drafted 17th overall in 1994 by the Buffalo Sabres, where he scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game against Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning and was then traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Primeau was acquired by the San Jose Sharks from the Penguins in exchange for Matt Bradley. After a career year in 2003–04, Primeau was eligible for group IV unrestricted free agency. However, he decided to re-sign with the Sharks.

Primeau was traded to the Boston Bruins (along with Brad Stuart and Marco Sturm) in exchange for Joe Thornton. The Bruins traded him to the Calgary Flames (again along with Brad Stuart) in exchange for Chuck Kobasew and Andrew Ference.

On July 27, 2009, Primeau was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs (along with a second round pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft) in exchange for forward Colin Stuart, defenceman Anton Strålman and a seventh-round pick in 2012.

Prior to the start of the Maple Leafs’ 2010 training camp, Primeau was signed to a professional tryout contract with the Leafs. He was released at the conclusion of training camp.

Calen Addison

Calen Addison is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman known for playing with the Iowa Wild in the American Hockey League (AHL) as a prospect to the Minnesota Wild of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected in the second round, 53rd overall, by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft.

Addison played major junior hockey for the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the Western Hockey League (WHL) and was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, 53rd overall, in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He was signed by the Penguins to a three-year, entry-level contract on April 7, 2019.

During his final junior season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Addison was traded by the Penguins along with Alex Galchenyuk and a conditional first-round pick to the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Jason Zucker on February 10, 2020. Addison made his NHL debut on February 16, 2021, in the Wild’s 4–0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings.

Andrei Chibisov

Andrei Aleksandrovich Chibisov is a Russian professional ice hockey player known for playing with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

Undrafted, he played in the Kontinental Hockey League for HC Yugra, Ak Bars Kazan and Metallurg Magnitogorsk. On June 2, 2019. Chibisov agreed to a contract in North America, signing a one-year, entry-level contract with the Winnipeg Jets.

After attending his first training camp in North America, Chibisov was assigned by the Jets to begin the 2019–20 season with American Hockey League affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. He remained with the Moose for the majority of the season, contributing with 7 goals and 25 points in 50 games. He was recalled by the Jets on two occasions, featuring in 2 NHL games, going scoreless.

With the AHL season prematurely ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and left off the Jets Return to Play roster, Chibisov as a free agent returned to his native Russia, rejoining former club Metallurg Magnitogorsk on a three-year contract on 4 August 2020.

Brady Skjei

Brady Skjei is an American ice hockey player known as the defenseman for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected by the New York Rangers in the first round, 28th overall, in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.

Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, Skjei played for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, based out of Michigan and he decided to represent the United States in international play.

Skjei signed a contract with the New York Rangers on April 1, 2015. He reported to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL as an Amateur Tryout to finish the 2014–15 season. Skjei scored his first professional goal (and point) in a Calder Cup playoff game against the Providence Bruins on April 26, 2015.

He was promoted to the Rangers from Hartford on December 15, 2015 after recording 2 goals and 9 assists in 27 games for the Wolf Pack to start the 2015–16 season. Injuries to various New York Rangers’ defenseman increased Skjei’s ice time, but he failed to score any points in the 7 regular season games he played for the team. In the playoffs, Skjei recorded two assists as the Rangers were eliminated in the first round in 5 games by the Pittsburgh Penguins. On December 11, 2016 Skjei scored his first NHL goal against the New Jersey Devils. On April 16, 2017 he scored his first career playoff goal against the Montreal Canadiens. On April 29, 2017, Skjei had his first multiple goal game, when he scored two goals against the Ottawa Senators in the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs. On June 21, 2017, Skjei was named to the NHL’s 2017 All-Rookie team.

Returning for his sophomore 2017–18 season, the Rangers struggled as a team, announcing a team rebuild in February. Skjei would see his points total dip to 25, but also a significant increase in ice time following the trade of team captain Ryan McDonagh. After his second season, Skjei signed a six-year deal with the Rangers on July 28, 2018.

On February 24, 2020, Skjei was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a 2020 first-round pick.

Dustin Penner

Dustin Penner is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Anaheim Ducks, Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings and Washington Capitals. Undrafted by any NHL team, in 2004, Penner signed with Anaheim after playing college hockey at the University of Maine in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). Penner won the Stanley Cup in his first full season with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007, before adding a second Stanley Cup in his first full season with Los Angeles in 2012.

Anthony Greco

Anthony Greco is an American professional ice hockey player known as the forward for the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Greco was signed by the Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League to a two-year, two-way contact in November 2017. In the 2018–19 season, Greco was recalled from his assignment with the Springfield Thunderbirds to the Panthers on December 11, 2018 and made his NHL debut on December 13, in a 5–1 loss to the Minnesota Wild.

On July 15, 2019, Greco signed a one-year, two-way contract extension with the Panthers on July 15, 2019. In the following 2019–20 season, Greco continued with the Springfield Thunderbirds, collecting 19 points in 37 games. On February 20, 2020, Greco was traded by the Panthers to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Danick Martel Assigned to AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, Greco recorded 1 assist in just three games.

On February 24, 2020, Greco’s brief stint in the Lightning organization ended when he was included in a trade along with a 2020 first-round pick to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Barclay Goodrow and a third-round pick. He was immediately re-assigned to join the Sharks affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda. He posted 4 points in just 7 games with the Barracuda before the remainder of the season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On October 9, 2020, having left the Sharks as a free agent he joined the New York Rangers on a two-year, two-way contract. Greco made his Rangers debut against the San Jose Sharks on January 13, 2022.
