Who wore number 78 in NHL?

Athletes in every team sport have a number on their jersey to identify them. In the NHL, players are given numbers between 1 and 98. Sometimes, players get to choose their own number and other times, they’re just assigned a number by the team.

Marc Pouliot

Marc-Antoine Pouliot is a Canadian professional ice hockey player known for playing with Genève-Servette HC of the National League (NL). He was selected 22nd overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Beau Bennett

Beau Daniel Bennett is an American former professional ice hockey right winger. He last played with the Tucson Roadrunners of the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract with the Arizona Coyotes of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Bennett attended the University of Denver until 2012. He was drafted into the National Hockey League (NHL) by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first round, 20th overall, in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Bennett is one of the highest-drafted Californian born-and-trained players in NHL history and became the first California born-and-trained player to win the Stanley Cup when he won it as a member of the Penguins in 2016. However, his name was not engraved on the Cup due to not meeting NHL requirements for number of games played during the season.

Daniel Brickley

Daniel Brickley is an American professional ice hockey defenseman known for playing with the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Jacob Bryson

Jacob Bryson is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman known for playing with the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League (NHL). He played collegiately for Providence College.

Bryson was drafted in the fourth round, 99th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

After his junior season at Providence, Bryson signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Sabres. He joined the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League (AHL) for the 2019–20 season.

After he started the 2020–21 season with the Americans, Bryson was recalled by the Sabres on February 13, 2021. He made his NHL debut with the Sabres in a game against the New Jersey Devils on February 22, 2021.

Bryson scored his first NHL goal on March 6, 2021, against New York Islanders goaltender Semyon Varlamov.

Filip Chlapík

Filip Chlapík is a Czech professional ice hockey forward. He is known for playing with the HC Sparta Praha in the Czech Extraliga (ELH). Chlapík was selected 48th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Benn Ferriero

Benn Trevor Ferriero is an American former professional ice hockey center. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers and the Vancouver Canucks. Ferriero was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but grew up in Essex, Mass.

Byron Froese

Byron Froese is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He is known for playing with the Stockton Heat in the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract to the Calgary Flames in the National Hockey League (NHL). Froese was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the fourth round (119th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Evgeny Grachyov

Yevgeni Igorevich Grachyov, also known as Evgeny Grachev, is a Russian professional ice hockey centreman known for playing with Admiral Vladivostok of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He was drafted into the National Hockey League (NHL) by the New York Rangers in 2008, playing for both the Rangers and St. Louis Blues organizations prior to joining the KHL.

Éric Landry

Joseph Éric Lucien Landry is a French-Canadian former professional ice hockey player. Landry played in four National Hockey League (NHL) seasons, playing with the Calgary Flames and the Montreal Canadiens. Landry also played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) for HC Dynamo Moscow and Atlant Mytishchi and previously in the Swiss National League A (NLA) for HC Lausanne, EHC Basel, and HC Ambrì-Piotta. In 2017, he became head coach of the Gatineau Olympiques in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Born in Gatineau, Landry played midget hockey for Abitibi-Temiscamingue Forestiers, then played two seasons of junior hockey for St. Hyacinthe Laser of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Although he was not drafted in the NHL Entry Draft, Landry pursued a professional career in hockey. For the 1995–96 season, he joined the Cape Breton Oilers of the American Hockey League (AHL) to start his career. Landry moved on to the Hamilton Bulldogs for 1996–97. He was then signed as a free agent by the Calgary Flames. He played two seasons for the Flames’ organization, split between the Saint John Flames and Calgary.

He was traded to the San Jose Sharks in July 1999. Landry played one season in the Sharks organization, for their Kentucky Thoroughblades affiliate. In 2000, he was signed by the Montreal Canadiens and played in the organization for three years, split between Montreal and Quebec Citadelles and the Utah Grizzlies of the AHL. In 2003, Landry left North America to play with Lausanne of the Swiss league. He left North America having played parts of four seasons in the NHL, scoring 5 goals and 9 assists for 14 points in 68 games. Landry was the first player in Canadiens’ history to wear jersey number of 78.

After playing four seasons in the NLA in Switzerland for Lausanne and Basel, Landry moved to Russia, where he played two seasons with Moscow Dynamo and a season with Atlant Mytishchi. Landry returned to the NLA in 2010, to play for HC Ambrì-Piotta.

Tyler Lewington

Tyler Lewington is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman known for playing with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted 204th overall, in the seventh round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Washington Capitals.

Kole Lind

Kole Lind is a Canadian professional ice hockey player known for playing with the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League (AHL) while under contract to the Seattle Kraken of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Lind was drafted by the Canucks in the second round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, having previously played major junior with the Kelowna Rockets. He signed an entry level contract with the Canucks on March 1, 2018, and turned pro at the end of the 2017–18 season.

In the pandemic delayed 2020–21 season, Lind was assigned to the Utica Comets and posted 8 points in his first eight games, before suffering a broken nose when struck in the face during a game against the Rochester Americans on March 3, 2021. After being cleared medically, he was assigned to the Canucks’ taxi squad on April 1, 2021. He made his NHL debut with the Canucks in a 4–1 defeat to the Toronto Maple Leafs on April 29, 2021.

On July 21, 2021, Lind was selected from the Canucks at the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft by the Seattle Kraken.

Steven Lorentz

Steven Lorentz is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre known for playing with the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL). Lorentz was drafted in the seventh round, 186th overall, by the Hurricanes at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

On June 27, 2015, the Carolina Hurricanes selected Lorentz in the seventh round, 186th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Following his fourth completed junior OHL season with the Peterborough Petes, the Hurricanes signed Lorentz on a three-year, entry-level contract on April 21, 2017.

Lorentz was one of those 31 players for the Hurricanes invited to the “bubble” as part of the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, but he did not play.

On October 15, 2020, the Hurricanes signed Lorentz to a two-year, two-way contract. In the pandemic delayed 2020–21 season, Lorentz made his NHL debut on January 28, 2021 in a game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He subsequently recorded his first point on January 30 with an assist against the Dallas Stars. Lorentz scored his first career NHL goal on March 2, 2021 in a game against the Nashville Predators.

Carolina Hurricanes Director of Amateur Scouting Tony MacDonald said of Lorentz in 2015, “He’s a good two-way player who plays well with and without the puck.”

Maxim Mamin

Maxim Vladimirovich Mamin is a Russian professional ice hockey forward known for playing with the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted 175th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Panthers.

He made his professional debut in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with CSKA Moscow during the 2014–15 season. He concluded his rookie campaign with 5 goals and 10 points in 39 games.

Mamin left CSKA and agreed to a two-year, entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers. He was then sent to the Panthers AHL affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds. Mamin was called up to the NHL on 1 January 2018. He made his NHL debut on 7 January against the Columbus Blue Jackets before being sent back to the AHL. Mamin was recalled and he recorded his first NHL goal on 22 February 2018, against the Washington Capitals.

During the 2018–19 season, Mamin appeared in 7 scoreless games with the Panthers. Unable to secure a regular role within the roster, Mamin was loaned by the Panthers to former KHL club, CSKA Moscow, for the remainder of the season. Mamim scored 3 points in 25 games with CSKA, however made his biggest impact in the playoffs, scoring the Championship winning goal for CSKA against Avangard Omsk to claim the Gagarin Cup.

As an impending restricted free agent by the Panthers, Mamin opted to continue his second stint with CKSA, signing a two-year contract through 2021.

At the conclusion of his contract with CSKA, having developed into a consistent scoring threat with the club, Mamin opted to return to the NHL in signing a one-year, $975,000 contract with the Panthers.

Corey Tropp

Corey Tropp is an American professional ice hockey player known for playing with the Vienna Capitals of the ICE Hockey League (ICEHL). He has previously played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Anaheim Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Buffalo Sabres, the latter of which drafted him in the third round, 89th overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
