B-gap
What is B-gap in American football?
What does shooting B-gap mean?
Who is responsible for B-gap actions?
B-gap is a space left between the offensive guards and offensive guards on the offensive line.
The teams use B-gap for running back actions or block widening purposes. The defenders may reach the entry point of the backfield via B-gap. It is wider than A-gap, responding to the center from either field side.
B-gaps are responsibility of interior defenders who are commonly acting inside defensive tackles and defensive tackles. Assigning gaps usually helps defense account for running lanes to coordinate blitz schemes and pass rushers for successful rushing attempt. Often the pressure schemes are built using these gaps. That’s why team’s offensive line protection requires their coverage to prevent defenders against the upfield position and destroy rushing or quarterback passing plays. To shoot B-gap, the player should run successfully between the tackle and the guard on any side of the offensive line.
