Blitz
What is blitz in American football?
Is blitz always effective for coverage?
How many players are blitzers?
The blitz is a defensive way to disrupt the passing attempts or rushing plays.
Most defenders build figures around the quarterback. They change alignment very fast. The quarterback is forced to shorten its reads and make a throw. The advantageous defenders often intercept the pass and become a new offense.
This happens because there are only five offensive blockers. The tackles, guards and center are eligible blockers. The same players become the potential passing target for the quarterback. Otherwise, the number of blitzes is more than five. The opposing team must control each blocker and have extra executors to work against receivers and possible pass routes.
The blitzes have some disadvantages compared to classic coverages. The offensive players learn how to recognize it and adopt the changes with coded voice or gesture messages. The quarterback also calls other players to shift the pass protection. The receiver’s aggression is one of the methods to keep hand on the route clarity. The final disadvantage is larger gaps between defensive linemen. That’s a great help for the receiver.
