The interconference rivalry between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins started in 1976. It started as interdivisional in 1976 but the Buccaneers switched the conferences with Seattle. They played in the NFC Central division before moving to the NFC South division in the 2002 season.

This rivalry has three branches. The regular season games happen every four years according to the schedule formula. They can meet in preseason or exhibition matches too. And the third branch is the Super Bowl. It’s absent now.

The teams played regular season games 12 times. Each team has had a streak of 3 matches since 1985. Dolphins won three consecutive games, then Buccaneers favored three times in a row. Dolphins won a game in 2009, the Buccaneers won three times again.

The teams had more than 30 preseason games. Buccaneers and Dolphins met irregularly in the 1980s. Dolphins won all four seasons in 1976-1979. Buccaneers rehabilitated in 1984. Miami won in 1986 prior to the long break till 1991, when their preseason rivalry became regular. There were a couple of breaks: 1993, 1999, 2016, 2017 and 2020 seasons. That was compensation for two preseason games in 1996 with the Dolphins’ dominance.

Five quarterbacks played for both teams during their careers. Jason Garrett played for Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004 but he signed a contract with the Dolphins. He was inactive till the season ended. He became the Miami quarterback coach in the next season. Josh Rosen spent two years in Florida. He was a part of the Miami Dolphins in 2019, then moved to Tampa Bay for the next season. Ryan Fitzpatrick played for Buccaneers in the 2017-2018 seasons then continued his career in Florida, playing for Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The teams have connections in the coaching personnel too. The Bucaneers present general manager Jason Licht worked with Dolphins as offensive quality control coordinator and scouting assistant in the mid-90s. Their head coach Todd Bowles was the Dolphins’ assistant and interim head coach from 2008 to 2011. Dennis Hickey had occupied a couple of jobs in Buccaneers from 1996 to 2013 before moving to Miami in 2014 to become their general manager.
