Bump and run
What is bump and run in football?
The bump and run is the former defensive technique. It was popular among defensive backs who stood ahead of the wide receiver. This player had to impede his opponent with arms or the entire body aimed to disrupt the route. Famous American Football League experts Willie Brown from the Oakland Raiders and Mel Blount of the Pittsburgh Steelers introduced the set of rules limiting the legal use of this technique.
The bump and run are suitable against scheduled routes. That means the receiver must be in the right place just in time. However, the experienced receivers often shed contact behind the cornerback to open the big play. It gave place to other techniques in 1978 when the rules implemented the 5-yard bumper between the receiver and defender except for holding of the receiver. Any distance violation is equal to 5 yards of the penalty and even an automatic first down.
