The dime is the defensive coverage using six defensive backs. This formation has the aim to counteract the passing plays. Two safeties and four cornerbacks collaborate with three defensive linemen to prevent medium- or long plays from the offense. That tactic may be effective because it reduces the offensive activity when they need a long starting pass. On the other side, the team is vulnerable to the lack of linebackers and extra lineman.
