What does down block mean in American football?

Where is down block used?

The down block is an attempt of the offensive lineman to drive the defender down the line of scrimmage.

Its other name is the angle block. It provides the advantage of leverage. The offensive lineman displaces the defender inside and gives other blocker a space required to flow outside the sealed off player.

The down block mechanics vary depending of the situation. It is used in a gap-blocking or power-running schemes single or together with other elements like kick out block to fix the running lane for the ball carrier.
