What is franchise tag in football?

A franchise tag is an option for the team to bind the player with exclusive or non-exclusive free agent status for one season. It has only one franchise tag plus a single transition tag. But the latest option is available only if the team didn’t use the franchise tag.

This system helps to retain valuable performers for a certain period. It means the player gets a non-negotiated salary according to the one-year contract. Thus, if it rejects to sign it till the season’s Week 10, it loses the right to sign such a contract.
