Inbounds lines
The inbounds lines, often known as hash marks in American football, are two parallel rows of lines in the center of the field. These lines are used to delineate the horizontal bounds of the playing field.
The inbounds lines aim to offer a reference point for referees to locate the ball. Depending on where the play ended, the ball is observed on or between the inbound lines after each play. If the game ends outside of the inbound lines, the ball is seen on the closest inbound line.
The inbounds lines in the NFL are 70 feet, 9 inches apart. They are 40 feet apart in college football. This distinction impacts the strategy and games of the two levels of play. In college football, for example, larger inbounds lines create greater room in the middle of the field, which might impact passing and running techniques.
