Man coverage
What is man coverage in American football?
When is straight man coverage scheme actual?
The man-to-man or simply man coverage is a defensive lining where each defender protects its offensive opponent. It may be a wide receiver, tight end, running back or even quarterback. The defenders must keep their eyes to avoid any attacks towards their team’s end zone. There are three types of such approach.
Man free. All defensive backs are engaged in the man-to-man coverage. The free safety becomes obsolete and turns to a safety valve area where the long completion touchdown is possible. This scheme is useful in blitzes at the quarterback or rush plays.
Straight man. The free safety can’t help. Each defensive and linebacker must count on its power in coverage. This scheme helps to force the quarterback’s sack.
Combo-man usually doubles the defense efforts. The defenders concentrate on the great receivers with perfect completion stats. An opposite quarterback must throw the ball to only one player with minimal qualities or rookie. Once it gets the ball, defenders weaken the strong receivers and force the fumble or pass. The offensive players are ready for the interception.
