Man-to-man coverage
The man-to-man coverage supposes any defender is responsible for blocking the relevant offensive player. For example, the defensive backs counteract to the wide receivers, and linebackers try to stop the tight ends or running backs. Thus, the defensive lineman press on the quarterback and other offenders.
It has significant pros. M2M keeps the defender focused on a certain target. The confidence in success helps the defense rationally use its resources instead of playing in bus mode. Besides, the offensive players are harder mindlessly pass through their opponents due to the latter following them.
However, the offenders need less effort to beat the single defender than in the zone case. M2M generates more touchdowns as the players use safer deep routes for passing or running. The defensive coordinators must always take into account this threat.
