The Minnesota shift is the founder of the majority of snap formations. It supposes the surprising shift to the new offensive alignment immediately before the snap. Yale University adopted it in 1910, and it’s still used by multiple franchises on all levels.
As mentioned in one article, the middle defensive guard must be loud to bring information about the defensive play. Thus, the quarterback may hear the defensive plans and perform this maneuver. But modern rules suggest the full stop for one full second before the snap, but the idea of the Minnesota shift is still alive.
