Nicklelback
The Nickelback is the additional defensive back used to cement the protection from strong offenses. It’s usually the cornerback or safety in any base defense. This performer got its name hinting at the 5-cent coin made of nickel.
The Nickelback replaces the Will linebacker, so it doesn’t impact the number of defensive linemen. The 4-3 defense transforms into 4-2-5. If the team exploited 3-4 defense, it would be 3-3-5, but it happens rarely. Most coordinators prefer to use Nickelback in formations with four defensive linemen to create additional matchups. The player tends to follow up with the third receiver of the offense.
This position is not starting one and appears when the offense starts to demonstrate its power. It takes the third cornerback or safety position. In Canada, formations with five defensive backs are normal, so the performer is considered a defensive halfback.
