Placekick
What is placekick in American football?
What placekick types still exist?
The placekick is a variety of kicking play in various sports. It’s used in gridiron for kickoffs, extra points and field goals. The cost of the successful placekick is one to three points. The punt is considered as the placekick too, but it doesn’t add scoring points for the kicking team. The latter is prohibited in arena football, that’s why placekick is almost a single way to gain yardage and points.
The gridiron field contains certain places for the kicks. These are a hole in the turf, a mound of sand or a plastic tee. Some leagues limit or ban the tees like in Canadian football. The placekick is the responsibility of two players – the holder and the kicker. Holder puts the ball in its place. The placekicker performs it.
Most placekicks may occur at any moment. Field goals are common in the end of fourth down or close to the full time if the difference is one to three points. The extra points take place after each touchdown. The kickoffs open the match or third quarter.
