Punt

Punt is a variety of a kick in American and Canadian football.

The ball usually drops from player’s hands with a further kick before contact with the field surface. The common aim is to punt the ball down to the opposing team. This method helps the receiving team to gain an advantageous position before possession changes.

There are several kinds of punt used in various situations. Directional punting helps to reduce the space for the returner. Fake punts have the task to cause misunderstanding and change the attention of defenders. The pooch punt often leads to the touchback. Some of them entered the gridiron and football from rugby.
