A punt return touchdown in American football happens when a player receives and runs a punt back to the end zone. A breakdown:

When an offense fails to get a first down after three tries, they commonly punt on fourth down. These kicks offer the opposite side an inferior field position, making scoring difficult for them on their next possession.

Returning the punted ball to the opposite team’s end zone is the receiving team’s goal. This is a “return.” The player performing this is the returner.
