Quarter defense
A “quarter” defense is a defensive formation in American football. It’s called a “quarter” defense because it usually uses four defensive backs, which is one quarter of the 11 players a team can have on the field at once.
The quarter defense is a pass-heavy defensive strategy often used when the other team is likely to make a long pass, like on third and long or at the end of a half or game when they need to quickly make up a lot of ground.
Most of the time, two cornerbacks and two safeties make up the four defensive backs in a quarter defense. The main job of these players is to protect against pass plays. Each usually covers a quarter of the deep field, where “quarter” defense comes from.
This defense gives up some of its ability to stop people from running to be better at stopping passes. Because of this, it’s not usually used when the other team is expected to run the ball.
It’s important to remember that the exact roles of each player can change depending on the play call and the team’s strategy.
