Ranking
What is ranking in American football?
How many ranking systems exist in football?
The ranking is a powerful statistical instrument in gridiron football. It helps the audience and experts to follow the results and progress of the team or player.
The most interesting are regular season rankings. There are three rank types: overall, conference and divisional. Each time the team wins, loses or ties, it gets a certain number of points according to the league rules. These points affect the team’s position. The club with maximum points gets the first rank, the weakest team closes the ranking and may relegate to the lower division according to the rules. If some teams have an equal number of points, their positions depend on the difference between goals for and against, the results of their matches or other additional fixtures.
The personal rankings have wider structure. They include positional leadership or the element tables. These rankings affect the approximate player’s value and contribution to the team’s result. A ranking table motivates the players and their coaches to improve some of the important qualities for its position. The better players have more chances to start the game while their colleagues with lower contribution substitute the leaders. These rankings are career and seasonal.
The ranking factors here include the number of attempts, distance gained and more others. If the players get an equal punting average, the better position takes the player with more yardage or lower number of punts. The first overall career place often take the players who finished the career or spent more seasons.
