Right end

The word “right end” can apply to an offensive or defensive position in American football. This is its use:

Offensive Formation:

• Right ends typically play on the offensive line’s right side.
• This tight end may block for the running game and catch passes for the passing game.
• The right end may be used to refer to the right tight end in formations with tight ends on both sides of the line.

Forming Defense:

• In some formations, the right end is the defensive end on the right side of the defensive line.
• Right defensive ends typically contain the run and rush the quarterback in throwing situations.

Alignment:

The right end also helps align players on the field with the attacking or defensive formation.

Historic Use:

Players at the end of the line were once called “end” players. As football became more specialized, “tight end” and “defensive end” became more common while “right end” became less common.
