Rushing first downs percentage

The “Rushing First Down Percentage” is a common statistic in American football that measures how many first downs a team or player has gained through rushing (running). In particular, it determines how many times a runner has been successful on a first down out of total rushing attempts.

The math goes like this:

Percentage of Rushing First Downs = 100 x (Number of First Downs gained via Rushing / Total Number of Rushing Attempts).

If a running back makes 20 rushing attempts and 5 of them result in a first down, their Rushing First Down Percentage for that game is:

Proportion of First Downs Obtained Via Rushing = (5 + 20)/100 = 25%

This signifies that one in four of the runner’s attempts at a first down were successful. This metric can help you judge a team’s or an individual’s running game by showing how often their rushes advance the ball down the field and keep drives alive.
