Scat
In American football, the word “scat” can mean different things based on the situation. These are the two primary meanings:
Scat Protection: A “scat” shield is a 6-man shield used in some pass protection methods. In this case, ” SCAT ” refers to strong side pass defense using man-blocking rules. Like a plan called “BASE,” the running back (RB) is in charge of blocking the weak side of the formation. Tight end (TE) and halfback (HB) can move from the line in this plan, which means they can go out for passes. The first lineman not covered from the center to the call side has two reads: one from the linebacker to a marked defender (called #3). This defense plan also includes hots (quick pass choices) on the strong side and break-offs on the weak side. These are changes made based on what the defense does.
A scatback is a running back known for being quick and sneaky rather than big or strong. Scatbacks usually play at halfback or tailback and try to get past players to gain a lot of yardage by running the ball or catching passes. Compared to regular running backs, they tend to be smaller and don’t break tackles very often. Instead, they run to the outside instead of between the tackles.
It’s important to know how the word “scat” is used because it can mean different things to different coaches and methods in American football.
