Scrimmage

The word scrimmage has two meanings in American football. An imaginary line between the teams at the moment of snap is the most common. Each play begins with the ball lying on the ground with the longest axis facing the goal line. It’s a scrimmage.

The players can participate in scrimmage too. That may relate to the fact mentioned above but also to the game. If the teams play the scrimmage, they do it in an exhibition manner. The result of this game doesn’t impact the regular season and can use other rules than the regular season or playoff match.
