Single wing
What is single wing in American football?
Who created the single wing offense?
The single wing formation includes one wingback and a handed snap. It was a precursor of the current shotgun and spread formations. Sometimes they included an extra eligible receiver.
The first coach who used single-wing formation was Glenn Warner. Its offensive style included four back players: wing-, quarter-, full- and tailback. This offense was unbalanced because one side contained more players than the other. Coach Warner then transformed it. The linemen combined offensive and defensive functions and their alignment tied on both field sides. This type of offense was popular till the 1940s and soon replaced with T formation. The single-wing formation is rarely used in football matches, but stayed in the training process.
