Split back formation
The split back formation supposes an exploit of the quarterback directly under the center. Running backs surround him behind to the left and right. These players stand in line with guards in a step proximity to the quarterback. The tight end positions under the tackle and wide receivers stand on the farthest positions.
The formation has multiple variations. It is also known as a pro set, making running a wide spectrum of plays possible. The most important among them is the shotgun option. Sometimes, two backs keep the defense on edge.
The coach can choose to replace the receiver with an auxiliary tight end. Another option is shifting the places where the running backs sit. Usually, each RB covers an equal half of the field. But the coordinators can shift position deeper to the backfield or elsewhere if the situation requires such development.
