Square in

A “square in” in American football refers to a particular kind of throw route that a receiver runs. This is how it operates:

  • First Route: The receiver starts the play by sprinting straight down the field to get more ground and possibly bring a defensive player—typically a safety or cornerback—alongside them.
  • Cut Inwards: The receiver makes a quick, 90-degree cut inward towards the middle of the field after sprinting straight for a predetermined distance, which can vary depending on the play design but is often between 10 and 20 yards.
  • Timing and Accuracy: This approach necessitates a sharp cut and accurate timing. After cutting, the quarterback usually delivers the ball to the receiver, where they will be. The receiver’s ability to get away from the defender during this cut determines whether or not the route is successful.
  • The goal of the square in route is to take advantage of the middle sections of the defense, particularly when zone coverage systems are in play and there are gaps between defenders. It works well when the offense needs to gain a fair amount of yardage to get a first down.
  • Variations: Depending on the play design and game state, the depth of the route before the cut may change. Receivers may run a shortened version of this route, particularly in offenses that rely on timing or rapid passing.
  • This route, essential to many passing offenses, calls for accurate timing, precise running abilities from the quarterback, and strong route-running abilities from the receiver.
