In American football, a player is the “primary starter” at his position if he starts most of the games in a season. This means that when the team is at full strength, he is the first choice for his position and is usually on the field for the game’s first play.
Counting the seasons in which a player started most of his team’s games will tell you how many seasons he was his team’s main starter at his position. This is often used to judge how consistent, reliable, and good a player is.
For example, a quarterback would be called the primary starter for a season if he started 10 out of 16 games. If he does this for 5 years, he will have been his team’s main player for 5 years.
It’s important to remember that just because a player is the main starter doesn’t mean he’s the best at his role on the team. It could also be because there aren’t enough players at that spot, other players got hurt, or the boss had a plan. But most of the time, the main starter is one of the team’s best players.
