The vested veteran is a player with four or more accrued seasons in the league. It needs to appear 24 times on the field during this time and play six regular season games per year. Most teams feel free to remove them from their roster and open space for younger talents. The leagues guarantee salary payments guaranteed for the year if it’s on roster at the regular season’s first game.
The vested veterans are eligible for the termination pay. Some teams save money with the cutting option. They sign this veteran and cut it between weeks 1 and 2 of the regular season. This reduces VV’s pay from 100% to 25% of its salary. The VV may claim for termination pay only one time in the career. It’s ineligible for that pay at the second time.
